YOUTH AFFAIRS:

IS IT WRONG TO LET SOMEONE LOOK AT MY PAPER WHILE TAKING A TEST AT SCHOOL?

Garland M. Robinson

Yes, it is wrong. You are not doing them any favor at all by allowing them to cheat. Those who go through life and never do for themselves are headed for serious trouble. When they are called upon for a most important task, they will not be able to do it for they have never learned to do for themselves. They have not learned one of life's most important lessons - self-disciple. Those who desire to go to heaven must learn and practice this lesson or they will never go there. Jesus said, ". If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). That takes energy and determination and labor.

It won't do any good to sit back and say, "Well, I'm not the one cheating." You may not be the one cheating, but you are contributing to another so they may cheat. You are a willing participant in the sin of another. 1 Timothy 5:22 says, ". neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure." When you knowingly allow someone to look on your paper, you become a participant with them. Doing nothing when others do wrong is counted to be just as guilty (Obadiah 11). Psalm 50:18 also speaks of the same.

The Bible principle is that each must do his own work. "And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you" (1 Thess. 4:11). Christians are to labor for themselves (Acts 20:35).

Cheating is the same as stealing. The one who cheats is taking that which is not his; that for which he had not worked or earned. The Bible is clear on this matter: ".Thou shalt not steal" (Romans 13:9). "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth" (Ephesians 4:28).

Cheating is not honest. The Bible says: "Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men" (Romans 12:17).

Christians are to be an example of a believer (1 Timothy 4:12). Even if you're not a Christian, you still ought to do good and right. Titus 2:12 teaches that all should ". live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world."
