God’s Amazing Grace
Robert Meredith
What is involved in God’s grace? The word grace means “unmerited favor.” When one begins to consider God’s grace, there are many things that God’s grace has provided and made possible which we are told about in the Bible. Every soul needs to be thankful to God that He has extended to man His unmerited favor and made it possible for mankind to have an eternal home with Him in heaven. Let us examine some things involved in God’s grace.
In the physical world, God’s grace has provided the things necessary to sustain life. On one occasion, Jesus said, “For He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). It is by God’s grace that man has food on his table, a roof over his head, and clothes on his back. Therefore, one should be thankful for his daily bread (Matthew 6:11). To the child of God, Jesus promised that if one seeks first God’s kingdom and His righteousness, God would provide all the needs of this life (Matthew 6:25-33). In a spiritual sense, God’s grace has provided for all our needs (2 Peter 1:3; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 12:9).
As one focuses on the spiritual things involved in God’s grace, he will see many, all working toward man’s salvation. Jesus is the gift of God’s grace (Romans 5:15; John 3:16; John 1:17), and by His death salvation is made possible. The Holy Spirit tells us concerning Christ, “That He by the grace of God should taste death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). His death involved the shedding of His blood which provided redemption (Romans 5:9; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14), sanctification (Hebrews 10:29), justification (Romans 3:24; Romans 5:9; Titus 3:7), forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), or, to sum it all up, salvation (Titus 2:11; Ephesians 2:5).
Not only did God provide Christ and His atoning death for man by His grace, but also He has provided to man, by His grace, all things necessary to sustain us spiritually (2 Peter 1:3). The gospel, which is God’s saving power (Romans 1:16), has been revealed, recorded and all things pertaining to it have been provided by God’s grace (Acts 20:24; 1 Peter 5:12 with 1 Corinthians 15:1; Titus 2:11-12). The precious Word of God, the Bible, is the “word of His grace” (Acts 20:32), and directs man in the way of righteousness by His grace (Psalm 119:105; Acts 20:32), making it possible for man to be taught of God (John 6:44-45), and to come to Christ by the preaching of grace (Acts 18:27; 1 Corinthians 1:21). Furthermore, as a faithful child of God, one can approach the throne of Grace in prayer (Hebrews 4:16) and have heaven as his eternal home (Romans 6:23), by grace.
This amazing grace is available to all (Matthew 11:28; Revelation 22:17) who are willing to come to Christ in humble obedience (Hebrews 5:8-9; Romans 1:5; Romans 16:26; Matthew 7:21). Man is saved by God’s grace and accesses His grace and mercy by gospel obedience. The apostle Paul wrote, “According to His mercy He saved us” (How?) “by the washing of regeneration; and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5). On being born again, one relies on God’s grace and does not refuse it.
