The Lord Has Been Mindful Of Me

Robert Meredith

We should always be thankful for the many blessings that God showers down on us (James 1:17).  This week our nation has set aside Thursday as a day of Thanksgiving.  We should not only be thankful on this, my favorite holiday, but every day.

I was reared at the Oak Acres church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee.  I am extremely thankful for the soundness of that congregation.  The church there always stood for truth and always had faithful men filling the pulpit.  Richard Curry was the preacher there for many years, and was preaching for the congregation when it moved from South Parkway to the Whitehaven location and became known as Oak Acres.  He was the local evangelist from before I was born until I was about ten years of age.  He also labored as an instructor at the Memphis School of Preaching for some thirty years.  Brother Curry served as an elder for many years at Oak Acres, along with other faithful men.  Many good memories come flooding to my mind as I recall Brother Curry.  He had a great influence on my life.  My parents and I greatly respected this God fearing man.  One of his favorite songs was, “The Lord has been mindful of me.”  This song expresses many great truths about which I would like for us to think.

Though I, thro the valley of shadow; O’er mountain or troubled sea, And oft in the darkness, have traveled, The Lord has been mindful of me!”  The child of God faces hardships in life just as any other person.  In the face of these difficulties, the Christian can have peace (John 14:27) because he knows that God will take of him (Matthew 6:33).

“Much more than my grief and my sorrow; Much more than adversity.  Much more than the all I have given, The Lord has been mindful of me!”  As bad as things may get sometimes or as much as we may believe that we have done, the Lord’s blessings far outweigh it.  The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 5:12-21 that God’s grace is far greater in abundance than what man lost in sin.  Paul was well familiar with difficulties (2 Corinthians 11:23-28), yet God told him that His grace was sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9).  God’s grace is sufficient in our lives as well.  Christians can go to God’s throne in prayer and know that God hears, cares and will help (Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 Peter 5:7).

“I’m rich!  I am saved! I am happy!  I’ve health and prosperity!  I’ve friends!  I have doors ever open!  The Lord has been mindful of me!”  There are so many blessings in life that man seems to overlook and forget.  Our material blessings, our health, and, more importantly, our spiritual blessings should cause us to rejoice!  The Lord truly has been mindful of us!

“The Lord has been mindful of me!  He blesses and blesses again!  My God is the God of the living!  How excellent is His name!”  Richard Curry has gone to his wonderful reward (Revelation 14:13).  The Lord was indeed mindful of Brother Curry and will be of all His faithful children (2 Timothy 4:8).  The Lord has blessed us all so much.  I have been so blessed by having come in contact with Brother Curry and many other faithful Christians.  You and I do not deserve God’s manifold grace.  The spiritual blessings which are found only in Christ (Ephesians 1:3) are so tremendous.  The fact that man can have his sins forgiven and have a home I heaven with God is beyond our comprehension.  We, as Richard Curry, can say, “The Lord has been mindful of me!
